Physical Education (P.E.) Programs (Aligned with CA
P.E. Model Content Standards, Strands 1 & 2)

These courses meet requirements for physical fitness, skill development, and social responsibility

1. Basic Kendo (Japanese Fencing):
Students learn fundamental movement concepts including correct posture, footwork, and basic suburi (practice strikes). The course emphasizes physical conditioning, focus, and adherence to formal etiquette, directly addressing Strand 3 (Social & Personal Development) through discipline and respect.

2. Basic Karate (Empty Hand):
This course develops gross motor skills and physical fitness through fundamental blocks, strikes, and stances. Students learn introductory kata (forms) and controlled partner drills, significantly improving balance, coordination, and muscular strength, aligning with Strand 1 (Motor Skills) and Strand 2 (Movement Concepts).

3. Basic Judo/Jujitsu (Grappling): 
Focuses heavily on safety, balance, and core strength. The curriculum centers on proper ukemi (breakfalls), grips, and fundamental throws/ground techniques. This challenging activity fosters self-management and group cohesion, supporting Strand 2 (Physical Fitness) and Strand 3 (Social Development). Cultural Enrichment Programs (Aligned with CA VAPA & World Language Standards) These courses support elective credits in visual arts, music, and world language/humanities.

4. Japanese Language 1 (Beginner):
Focuses on basic Japanese pronunciation, greetings, and reading/writing Hiragana. The course emphasizes basic communicative competence in culturally appropriate contexts, aligning with CA World Language Standards (Communication and Cultures).

5. Japanese Language 2 (Advanced Beginner):
Builds upon Language 1, introducing Katakana, basic grammar, simple conversational structures, and foundational Kanji. This promotes cross-cultural understanding and communicative growth, satisfying CA World Language Standards (Cultures and Connections).

6. Basic Calligraphy (Shodo):
This course introduces the art of brush and ink work, focusing on composition and the kaisho (block script) style. It develops fine motor skills and creative expression, directly aligning with CA VAPA Standards (Visual Arts: Creating, Presenting, and Connecting) through the mastery of a specific medium and its historical context.

7. Taiko Drums 1 (Basic Ensemble):

Students learn fundamental uchi-kata (striking techniques), rhythm, and
timing necessary for ensemble performance. The course explores
the cultural origins and community role of Taiko, aligning with CA VAPA Standards (Music: Performing, Creating, and Connecting) through musical literacy and cultural relevance.
